Molokans
RUAZENHE

What of them now

Today

There are ever fewer Molokans in Azerbaijan: the young leave, the community ages. But Ivanovka holds on — and remains a living symbol of multi-ethnic Azerbaijan.

Today the Molokan community is going through hard times, but it is not vanishing: its traditions are supported by the residents themselves, by the state, and by guests who come for its distinctiveness.

Today

A changing community

Since the 1990s many Molokans have left — above all for Russia. Communities in several villages have all but disappeared, and Ivanovka has remained the main hearth of Molokan life in the country.

Those who stayed grow fewer, but they go on working, singing and keeping the faith of their forefathers.

Today

Part of the Azerbaijani mosaic

The Molokans have long been part of multi-ethnic Azerbaijan. Their contribution to agriculture and culture is valued, and Ivanovka's distinctiveness draws tourists and researchers.

Guest houses, tours and interest in the traditions give the community hope: as long as people come ready to listen and learn, the Molokan heritage lives on.
